Insurance and coverage: reading the fine print
A simple explanation of what the basic rate includes and what to ask at the agency.

Understanding what the rate covers prevents confusion at the counter. In Colombia, SOAT is mandatory on the vehicle—but it doesn’t replace rental protections.
SOAT vs rental protections
SOAT covers medical care for traffic-accident victims; it does not cover material damage to the rented car or every liability scenario that matters to you as a driver.
Agencies offer basic protections in the rate plus broader options (often called full-risk coverage) that reduce your financial participation for damage or theft, subject to contract terms.
Always ask
Deductible / mandatory participation, exclusions (tires, glass, misuse), additional-driver rules, and how to report an incident.

- Cost and scope of extra coverages at the agency
- Procedure and contacts if something happens
