Colombia is best enjoyed kilometer by kilometer. These five routes mix landscapes, towns, and manageable distances for a rental-car road trip.
1. Coffee Region (Pereira – Armenia – Manizales)
Great for 2–4 days: Cocora Valley, Salento, Filandia, and coffee farms. Mostly paved roads with mountain sections and constant views.
2. Medellín – Guatapé – Jardín
El Peñol rock, the reservoir, and colorful Antioquian towns make this a photogenic classic. Start early on holiday weekends to avoid congestion.
3. Bogotá – Villa de Leyva
A short drive (about 3 hours) to colonial architecture and a highland climate—perfect for a weekend escape.
4. Bogotá – San Gil / Chicamocha Canyon
Spectacular scenery and constant curves. Drive by day, use engine braking on descents, and leave time for viewpoints and Barichara.
5. Cartagena – Santa Marta (Caribbean coast)
Connects the walled city, Barranquilla, and the Sierra Nevada by the sea. Check tolls and road conditions in the rainy season.
Match the vehicle group to the route: economy for city and short hops; SUV or 4x4 for mountains or rough roads. Rentame can help you choose.
